Beauty Lessons: How to use our award-winning eye pencils

Our award-winning Perfect Eye Pencil is a true makeup favorite – and with five shades, there is one for every look. From soft definition along the lash line to a smudged eye look or an unexpected touch of color.

But how do you actually use an eye pencil? How do you create a soft, smudged look? And which color enhances your specific eye color?

Here, we walk you through everything you need to know.

How do you use an eye pencil?

An eye pencil is one of the easiest ways to quickly give your eyes more definition. Apply Perfect Eye Pencil close to the lash line for a soft everyday look, or build up more color for a more intense result.

You can also focus the pencil on the outer corner of the eye to create more definition without framing the entire eye.

Want a softer expression? Gently blend the line out with a small brush before the pencil sets.

How do you create a smudged look with an eye pencil?

A smudged eye look doesn't have to be complicated. Start by applying Perfect Eye Pencil along the upper lash line. The line doesn't have to be perfect – that's part of the look.

Then use the Defining Brush 220 to soften the line and work the color slightly upwards and outwards towards the outer corner of the eye. The compact brush provides good precision and makes it easy to control both shape and intensity.

Want more color? Apply another layer of the pencil and continue blending until you have achieved the desired result.

You can also apply Perfect Eye Pencil over a larger part of the eyelid and blend the color out with the Defining Brush 220 for a quick and easy smoky eye.

Which eye pencil color suits my eye color?

Black and brown are classics, but a colored eye pencil is an easy way to highlight your eye color and give your makeup a new feel.

Perfect Eye Pencil is available in five shades – Iconic Black, Double Espresso, Burgundy Grace, Forest Green and Midnight Blue.

Blue eyes
Warm tones create a nice contrast to blue eyes. Double Espresso provides soft definition, while Burgundy Grace adds warmth and can make the blue in your eyes stand out.

Green eyes
Burgundy Grace is a great choice for green eyes because the wine-red tone creates a contrast against the green. Double Espresso instead provides a softer and more classic definition.

Brown eyes
Brown eyes go well with many different shades. Forest Green and Midnight Blue add color and contrast, while Iconic Black gives a more classic and intense look.

Grey eyes
Midnight Blue can highlight the cooler tones in grey eyes, while Double Espresso creates a softer contrast.

Of course, there are no rules. Choose the shade you like and base it on the look you want to create.

Find your Perfect Eye Pencil

Five shades, five different looks – from classic definition to a subtle touch of color.

Iconic Black – classic black for an intense and defined look.

Double Espresso – deep brown for softer definition and an alternative to black.

Burgundy Grace – a deep wine-red shade that adds warmth and color.

Forest Green – deep green that gives your eye look a subtle twist.

Midnight Blue – dark blue for definition with a hint of color.

Eye pencil or liquid eyeliner – what is the difference?

It is primarily about the result you want to create.

An eye pencil gives a softer expression and makes it easy to go from a defined line to a smudged look. A liquid eyeliner is better suited when you want a sharp and precise line or want to create a distinct wing.

And you don't have to choose. Combine Perfect Eye Pencil with liquid eyeliner when you want both soft definition and more precision.

How do you make your eye pencil last all day?

Start with a dry eyelid so that the pencil gets a good grip. If you tend to get oily around your eyes, you can use a small amount of powder or eyeshadow before application.

Work with the pencil immediately after application if you want to create a smudged effect. Once you are satisfied with the shape, let it set.

For extra intensity and longevity, you can also apply an eyeshadow in a similar shade on top.

A simple trick: Perfect Eye Pencil + Defining Brush 220

Want to get even more out of your eye pencil? Defining Brush 220 makes it easy to change the result in just a few movements.

Use the brush to soften the line along the lash line, create a smudged effect, or blend out your Perfect Eye Pencil over the eyelid.

Together, the Perfect Eye Pencil and Defining Brush 220 can take you from a quick everyday look to a more intense smoky eye – without needing a particularly steady hand.
